Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
