We are analyzing images and video posted this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures originated was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.

Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
