US Facilitates Ukraine Talks in Abu Dhabi as White House Seeks for Conflict Resolution
Diplomatic negotiations involving American, Moscow, and Kyiv representatives began in Abu Dhabi this Tuesday, marking the latest step in efforts to achieve a ceasefire deal to resolve the protracted conflict in the region.
High-Level Participants and Opening Talks
US Army official the US representative allegedly held talks with a Russian team on the eve of the talks, with discussions proceeding into Tuesday.
“Discussions are progressing positively and we maintain hope. Secretary Driscoll is closely synchronised with the White House ... as these talks progress,” an official representative commented.
Ukraine’s top intelligence official, the head of military intelligence, was anticipated to participate in the meetings, though it remained unclear whether direct talks with Russian representatives would take place or if distinct one-on-one sessions would be held.
The composition of the Russian delegation was not immediately clear. “No comment is available. We are following the media reports,” a Kremlin representative informed state media.
Context and Revised Peace Plan
These talks come after prior discussions in a European nation where American and Kyiv officials reworked a draft American plan for ending the war.
Russia has not yet accepted the most recent draft of the proposal and is not expected to accept many of the Ukrainian revisions.
Moscow’s foreign minister, the Russian diplomat, declared that any modified peace plan must adhere to the “intent and text” of what was discussed during earlier high-level talks between the two countries.
International Reactions and Concerns
EU officials are apparently finding it difficult to stay engaged in the process as American representatives drive the efforts.
The Finnish president, a European figure, who has emerged as a key mediator between Washington and EU officials, commented that the next few days would be critical in efforts to reach a resolution.
He reportedly spoke with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the alliance representatives, emphasizing that “Decisions about Ukraine’s future rest with its people, and while European security matters are for Europe to resolve.”
At the same time, the French president, the French official, warned against a agreement that would amount to a “surrender” for the nation.
“What was put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable for the Russians. But does this imply it should be endorsed by Ukraine and Europe? Certainly not,” he stated.
Details of the Initial American Plan
American plan was originally made up of 28 points and was based on dialog between US and Russian representatives, with input from Ukrainian defense authorities.
Major aspects of the plan allegedly included:
- Ukraine relinquishing areas currently occupied by Moscow
- Further zones that might be expected to be voluntarily given up
- Limits on the size of the military forces
- Immunity for all parties in the war regarding war crimes
Recent Developments and Continuing Challenges
American official reportedly went to Kyiv to inform the Ukrainian president on the proposal and press rapid acceptance.
This pressure, combined with the leaking of the proposal, reportedly shocked Ukrainian and European authorities.
The Ukrainian president reportedly that the country was facing one of the toughest moments in its history and was being compelled to choose between “surrendering honor or sacrificing a vital partner.”
Later, the US official informed Nato ambassadors on the proposal in Kyiv, with one attendee labeling it as “a disastrous gathering” and noting that EU officials were shocked by both the substance and tone of the delivery.
Washington later moderated its position, indicating that the comprehensive plan was an “starting position for talks” rather than a definitive demand.
Security Situation During Talks
As diplomatic talks continue, Russian forces has maintained its nightly strikes on Ukraine’s urban centers.
Moscow’s forces reportedly launched dozens of missiles and many of drones at targets in and around Kyiv, as stated by Ukrainian sources.
The Ukrainian president stressed that the Kremlin must not believe it could win the war while negotiations were underway.
“The priority is coordinated diplomatic movement among all partners, through shared endeavors. Measures against Russia need to produce tangible effects,” he affirmed.
Kyiv’s leader confirmed that multiple people had been killed in the overnight attack on the city.
